Date set for Barnsley Central by-election

The date for the by-election to replace the disgraced Barnsley Central MP Eric Illsley has been announced as the 3rd March. We are preparing for a busy night then as Britain will be voting quite a lot on this particular Thursday! In addition to this Parliamentary vacancy there are five Council by-elections and a national referendum in Wales. We will be covering all of them on this site.

Not a lot has changed since in Barnsley since I posted this article on all the potential Parliamentary by-elections a week ago. Labour had already selected former soldier Dan Jarvis as their candidate before the vacancy was officially confirmed. The Liberal Democrat candidate from May Chris Wiggin announced that he will not seek his party's nomination for the by-election to concentrate on his bid to become a Councillor in York. Therefore, neither the Lib Dems nor the Conservatives have chosen their candidate with just three weeks to go until the by-election. The Lib Dems have their selection scheduled for Saturday and it is believed that Tories will also make their choice over the weekend.

As for the minor parties, UKIP and the BNP were quick off the mark to get their respective women in place for this by-election. Jane Collins will be the UKIP candidate whilst the BNP have selected Enis Dalton. The Pirate Party and the Legalise Cannabis Alliance may also contest this vacancy, but the short timeframe is likely to prevent too many smaller parties finding candidates to stand.
