Just the one by-election this week and it's for the Winchester City Council. Olivers Battery and Badgers Farm, which has to be up there in a list of bizarrely named wards, is vacant following the death of Liberal Democrat Councillor David Spender. He secured over two thirds of the vote in 2008 and although their majority was slightly smaller last May the ward has been consistently won by the Lib Dems in recent years. However, last week's close call in Solihull shows how quickly the Liberal Democrats' electoral fortunes have nosedived since the General Election, and it won't be an easy task to holding this seat considering the Conservatives were just 8 votes shy of winning here in 2006. The Lib Dems need to hang on to this seat as they are currently running Council without a majority.
