In the rare Tuesday by-election last night Plaid Cymru held a seat in Central Wales, despite a large swing towards the Liberal Democrats. The vacancy in the Ciliau Aeron ward, Ceredigion was caused by the disqualification of Cllr. Moelfryn Maskell for misconduct. He had failed to declare his interest in planning discussions relating to road improvements in an area where he owned land and. As Maskall isn't the only Plaid Cymru Councillor in Ceredigion to be summoned to a misconduct hearing the Lib Dems had an opportunity to take advantage of the nationalists' woes. The Lib Dems did manage to increase their vote by almost 20% from the 2008 result, but this wasn't enough to prevent John Lumley winning the seat for Plaid. Lumley managed to secure just over 55% of the vote, limiting his party's drop in vote share to 11.3%. The anti-Plaid coalition in Ceredigion will continue with a majority of 2, although the next tribunal is due to take place later this month.
